Watching the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! from Anderstorp and the Scandinavian Touringcar Championship made me think of the different Scandinavian drivers currently in racing and rallying. It’s a very small part of the world, but we produce drivers that can compete on a high international level. And I’m not including the crazy Finns, partly because they deserve a list of their own and partly because they’re not always considered a part of Scandinavia.

8. Thed Björk

Kinja'd!!!

The Swede has won the Scandinavian Touringcar Championship three times, with two of the titles the past two years with Volvo Polestar Racing. This year he’s won all the races so far in the toughest championship in Northern Europe, but lack of international success is the reason why he barely makes this list

7. Johan Kristoffersson

Kinja'd!!!

Competing in the FIA World Rallycross Championship and the Scandinavian Porsche Carrera Cup, Kristoffersson is a busy driver. Earlier he’s won the 2012 Scandinavian Touringcar Championship, and the International Superstars Series the same year. He started this season with a WorldRX win in Portugal, and has won both the rounds in the Carrera Cup so far. The last one was the most impressive, getting from P15 to P1 in just 11 laps. He’s currently second in WorldRX, behind Petter Solberg.

6. Mads Østberg

Kinja'd!!!

The first out of two WRC-drivers on this list, and one out of two with WRC victories. Since 2011 Østberg has been a safe bet for podium positions in the WRC, and he even has his best years yet to come. His only WRC-victory came in Portugal in 2012, but he’s been close at several later occassions. Currently a works driver for Citroën, the manufacturer that brought Sebastien Loeb to all his victories.

5. Andreas Mikkelsen

Kinja'd!!!

Third in the WRC last year, behind his two Volkswagen teammates Sebastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala. He hasn’t won a round in the WRC yet, but was very very close in Sweden this year, only to lose out to Ogier on the last stage. I can’t really decide if Mikkelsen is better than Østberg or not, but his results the past year is at least better.

4. Kevin Magnussen

Kinja'd!!!

The most recent Scandinavian to finish on the podium in F1, and is currently a reserve driver at McLaren. He had his debut season last year, after winning the Formula Renault Series the year before. A consistant finisher, that ended up 11th in his debut season. We’ve certainly got more coming from him in the future.

3. Mattias Ekström

Kinja'd!!!

Having raced in DTM since 2001, this is one of the best known drivers from Scandinavia. His 1999 STCC title earned him a DTM seat with Audi, and since then he’s won the title two times. Last year he finished second overall, and he opened this year with a 12th place and a win at Hockenheim. The Swede has proven that he’s versatile, having done one-offs in WRC, NASCAR and V8 Supercar with some success. This year he’s doing both DTM and WorldRX, and seems capable of winning both championships.

2. Petter Solberg

Kinja'd!!!

He’s the only driver to be World Champion in two different FIA disciplines, having won the WRC in 2003 and WorldRX in 2014. Despite a lot of choices, he wanted to defend his championship in rallycross, and has dominated so far this year. After four rounds, his worst finish is second! He also won the nations cup at the Race Of Champions last year, together with the now retired Tom Kristensen.

1. Marcus Ericsson

Kinja'd!!!

While he may not be the most accomplished or versatile driver, he’s the only Scandinavian driver to have a full time seat in F1 this year. It’s impossible to argue with that.

I’ve most certainly forgot someone, so if you think someone deserves a place among the best current racing drivers from Norway, Sweden or Denmark please comment!

Impressive. Add the Finns and you have quite a list from a small area of the world.

Good call, for some reason I thought he was retired. I haven’t watched a lot of endurance racing lately, but I remember now that I saw his name the last time I watched..

Uhhh B077as??? I would rate him over K Mag. How can you ever not put Kimi in there, sure he has had car problems but he is pretty damn good.

Robert Dahlgren?

Also, why did you pick the old ugly STCC S60...the facelifted version looks so much better.

Dahlgren isn’t the most successful, at least not in the last couple of years. I didn’t really notice that I used the old one, not a huge difference even if the new one looks better.

If Finland was included, at least Kimi, Bottas, Latvala and Heikkinen would get a spot.

I think the biggest thing in Denmark is the Danish Thundersport Championship, basicly racing Camaros and Mustangs. Jan Magnussen currently races there, but mostly semi-professional drivers.
